When many people hear pelvic floor physical therapy, they often think it’s only for

pregnancy or postpartum recovery. While that’s a great time to start, women at any

stage of life can benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy.

Your pelvic floor plays an important role in bladder, bowel, and sexual function. When

these muscles are overactive, weak or lacking coordination symptoms such as

incontinence, constipation or pelvic pain can appear affecting your daily activities.

Common Signs You May Benefit from Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

  • Urinary leakage – Leaking with coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercise or

    intercourse

  • Urinary frequency or urgency – If you find yourself emptying your bladder more

often than every 3 hours, or waking up multiple times per night

  • Constipation– Straining to empty bowels or not fully emptying

  • Painful periods – Abdominal, low back, or pelvic pain during your period

  • Painful intercourse or pelvic pain – feeling the sensation of hitting a wall

during intercourse, deep pain or frictional pain

  • Diastasis recti – If you notice bulging or separation in your abdomen or feel

    disconnected when performing core exercises

  • Low back, hip, or pelvic girdle pain

  • Pelvic heaviness– A feeling of bulging, heaviness, or pressure in the pelvis

  • Pain with tampon use or gynecologic exams – Difficulty or pain with inserting/

removing tampons or during pelvic exams

  • Tailbone pain (coccydynia) – Persistent tailbone pain while sitting or after a fall

  • Difficulty starting urine flow – Unable to fully empty the bladder

  • Postpartum recovery – Core weakness, bowel or bladder dysfunction

  • Post-surgical recovery – After procedures such as hysterectomy, C-section, or

    abdominal surgery

Why an Evaluation Matters

A pelvic floor physical therapy evaluation can help identify muscle weakness,

overactivity, or coordination issues that may be contributing to your symptoms.

At Elevate, our therapists take a whole-body approach — looking not just at the pelvic

floor, but also at the hips, spine, and core to determine any areas that need to be

addressed.

Through education, manual therapy and exercises tailored to our patient’s individual

needs we help restore strength, mobility, and confidence so you can return to your daily

life without symptoms and return to meaningful movement.
